“Quicksand” by George Mostoller

Watch your step!
Leather-clad foot sinking into the mire,
Dank dark swamp under high dimpled cliffs,
Bent grass springs crazy in all directions.
A man could get lost here,
Crawling on his belly,
Nose in, face down.
That smell like wet cabbage is hypnotic.
The warmth of invisible vapors
Pulls me deeper into the earth.

George Mostoller is an illustrator, poet, and songwriter (under the name Hawk Tubley). His illustrations and poems have appeared in previous issues of Steel Toe Review.
